SK4012 Summative Assessment: Empowerment in Social Work
This report is based on the case scenario of Tanya who is suffering from issue related to learning disability. The report will shed light on the approaches which is undertaken by the social worker. In the context to the problems with the approach taken by the social workers will be demonstrated. Further, it includes an analysis the approaches that are being positive, constructive and some social worker theory which is understood by the group. Along with this, it will provide deeper insight about the areas where the group has misunderstood the literature and application of the theories. It will also analyse the theories that are put into practices in the given scenario. In the second part it has analysing the only one theory and demonstrating the principles.
The Social worker took good initiatives to boost Tanya’s confidence; the social worker has taken the approach related to reducing her fear by active listening and understanding concern. By creating safe space for her to communicate in better way and understand the situation, the approach is effective to understand her real situation. By working in partnership social worker can explore the fear and easily give support to Tanya. The idea of family conference can put a positive impact on her; she can feel better after a conversation with the family and friends. Moreover, conversation with the family can increase the support (Milner, Myers and O'Byrne 2020). Through the procedure of active listening, she will feel heard and it can decrease her fear and reduce the anxiety level as well. In the context of given case scenario, empowerment approach is helpful in decreasing Tanya’s fear and dependency on others. By giving her time to understand her feeling which can empower her.
Cited case situation presents that the social workers took the empowerment approach for analysing Tanaya’s issues. By recognising the issues Tanaya needs more attention so she can covey her problems. The problems start from social workers is not concerned about the root cause about the learning disability. They can understand the root cause by delving into deep investigation about the dependency on others. Social workers can do counselling of Tanya and gain knowledge about her disability so that they can understand her situation in a better way (Fook, 2022). They can use alternative approach like personalise and deep analytical to overcome the fears as well as her disability barriers. By giving her more specification on her disabilities she can find out the areas to improve, which can boost her confidence and make her independent. By including some activity like regular communication, setting routine, goal setting, inculcate curiosity could effectively improve learning disabilities.
The approach of empowerment is aligned with the positive constructive encouragement with personal centred performs. Social workers have focused on the creating safe space for Tanya so she may share her feeling without hesitating. In accordance with Rocklage and Fazio (2020), personal centred practices can create a positive environment and a good atmosphere. The scenario mainly focused on gaining trust of her to understand her disability issues. Feather (2021) entailed that the mental wellness in important in individual’s life to live freely and overcome the loopholes. Support the gaining trust is the crucial part in the scenario, which shows by the social workers, is being created by giving her personal space to talk. By emphasising on Tanya’s self determination to decrease her fear about being dependent on others can be reduced by the time.
The group have understood the social worker theory and method, which is being used in context to the empowerment approach. By creating safe space for Tanya and understand her concern by attentively listening about the fear, which showcase the empowerment theory. By the family conference, it shows the work collaboratively by engaging people. The group has exhibited the disabilities of learning and empowerment theory, person- centred approach, which can create a positive outcome by taking small steps (Thompson 2020). The empowerment theory has emphases on motivating Tanya to improve her and work on the things. The social workers need to focus on reducing her disabilities and try to make her independent so she can do her daily tasks prominently.
The group misunderstood some areas there mentioned that empowerment process is denoted by the “self-help” which didn’t specify the techniques which is not defined for the Tanya’s problem. Moreover, the scenario can provide the deeper insight into the empowerment and disability challenges of Tanya. Scenario need to provide more specification about the Tanya’s family which is not living with her after having these kinds of disabilities issues (Sandberg and Alvesson, 2021). These misunderstanding have created in the group after analysing the scenario of Tanya. Additionally, the approaches of empowerment show case the main motive of the empowering strengths of Tanya and improve her independency to motivate her to do own work by herself.
The scenario showcases the empowerment, person centred, social worker theory emphasized on the key areas about the Tanya’s disability to improve and make her independent by understanding the issues. By giving her space it has been defined that the concern about her and active listening is resolved. Further, more focus is placed on empowerment so that Tanya can understand her needs and work more independently related to daily lives. By collaboratively work with her family to gain Tanya trust and boost her confidence, which shows the collaborative theory (Si and Chen 2020). The scenario doesn’t include the specification of theories just specify the empowerment theory; in the scenario there is number of theories can be included to create a clarification about the needs.
The main theory which is used by the social worker is empowerment theory, which is used to define the main loopholes to Tanya and empower her to work independently. It is the crucial to empower apart from fixing the issues. The main motive is to empower the strengths and create self- respect to be aware the problems. Empowerment can be measured in both type method and as well as theory (Payne, 2020). Empowerment is the on-going- procedure which is centred in the community locally; it involves respect, caring and participation collaboratively. The main principles of empowerment is finding problems and setting goals, the main role of social worker is interpositions in the interpersonal and level of communities. Main motivation is to create a self-efficacy by building Tanya’s belief in herself, so she can change circumstances. With regards to the concerned theoretical framework, Tanya has to develop deep understating the environment which negatively effecting her. Social workers is focusing on the understating her experiences and reason of fear (Healy 2022).
The main goal about the empowerment theory is about gaining power and control over aspects of Tanya’s daily lives. The approach develops into increasing the power of political, family, personal and interpersonal to sense empowered instead of feeling powerless. According to the views of Joseph (2020) empowerment achievement & failure is analysis by the possibility to create and build individual’s own capacities. By on-going use of empowerment Tanya gets the more positive support from her family and tries to manage her daily task in more independent ways. After having support of social workers and family Tanya involve in connecting socially, which can boost her confidence more. Tanya got to know about new things and actively taking part in the community activities, this participation finds her happiness in creating new friendship. After boosting her confidence by empowering her it has created whole new environment for her, she felt more valued and empowered after all having disabilities.
She recognizes her strengths while able to take her own decisions, which can help in reduce the support that is unnecessary (Empowerment Theory, 2023). The empowerment theory has help Tanya to create her own positive environment to stay independent and happy. After empowering the empowerment theory it is the main source to make her independent and can live happily. Tanya was having emotional and psychological dependency on the other; this dependency has increase cost of unnecessary support. This cost is now decreased by making her more independent and do the daily tasks by her. The “self-help” process which is a part of empowerment, it is helpful in creating support.
In the Scenario empowerment theory has been taken in the action, the alternative theory could be social worker theory. The social workers theory has been work well as alternative theory of empowerment. By focus on the listening and main reasons the fear and her dependency on the others along with principles of social work. By demonstrating the problems, to know the dilemmas and work on them. The empowerment theory has emphasised on self- help which can be created by the social worker theory and make more effect than it (Payne 2020). This can create a good environment for Tanya to understand her real life challenges and overcome her fear. By deeply investigate her areas of improvement by making use of social worker’s approach; the main motive of the Tanya’s disability can be caught up. This can be created along with strengthen her knowledge about the disability, boots her confidence. The strengths based approach can clearly define the problems of fear and understand her situation to identify the gaps (Social Work and Theories, 2023). The social worker can create an activity to identify her skills to make use of them in the boosting confidence. By identifying her daily tasks can create a straight strategy to motivate her to do her daily task and feel independent. The strengths based approach can be used to identify her weaknesses as well.
Conclusion
By concluding the report on personal assessment on the approach that has been taken by the social worker, the empowerment approach has used in the scenario. Analysation on the problems occurs in the approach taken by the social worker to identify the issues of Tanya. Delve into the understating of the group about the social worker theory. Identify some areas where group misunderstood the literature and application of the approach, which is occurred by the clarification about the theories. In second part, make use of one theory which used in the scenario by the social worker, the empowerment theory is the main focus of the scenario to make Tanya independent. By creating main principles of the theory, Asses the alternative theory of social worker can be used in the scenario to know the exact challenges of the Tanya.
