Introduction To The Importance of Preceptorship in Healthcare: Role, Skills, and Reflection
Preceptorship is a short-term relationship which is present between the student and an experienced clinician. It is very necessary for clinicians they provide accurate information to the students so that the students can learn the new and latest changes taking place in the external environment. With the help of the preceptor, the person can learn how they can put their education into practice so that they can work effectively. While working within the healthcare setting it is essential that the appropriate working and learning is ensured by the care workers so that they can provide better services to the patient. The current study will outline the role which the newly qualified practitioner has in the providing of treatment. Along with the analysis of the leadership, teamwork and communication will be analysed relating to the safety of the patient will be highlighted effectively. In the end, the action plan will be developed to develop different practices.
Main Body
Background
The preceptorship is referred to as the approach of teaching which includes providing support to the newly qualified practitioner. The newly appointed healthcare practitioner need proper guidance so that they can apply their knowledge effectively in practice. Thus, for this, the new staff will require knowledge from experienced people so that they can also work effectively and efficiently and care for the patient. Along with preceptorship, effective reflection must be carried on (Goode and et.al, 2019). This reflection is very necessary to be conducted because it will help the healthcare practitioner in improving their learning and efficiency. This is very necessary for the reason that with the help of reflection, the person will be in a position to evaluate the fact that what their learning so far and whether it is effectively applicable or not. With the help of the reflection it is evident that the person can analyse themselves and the things within which they are not good can be effectively learned.
The reflection is being implemented with the help of the GIBBS reflective cycle. This is a model of reflection which particularly starts with describing the current position and the feelings. Further, the evaluation takes place and then after the analysis is made conclusions are drawn. In the end, the action plan is created to improve the efficiency of the person (Dang, Arora and Rane, 2020). In comparison to the Kolb learning cycle, Gibbs's reflective cycle is much better. This is because of the reason that it will improve the efficiency of the person. The Kolb learning cycle is based on the particularly the learning only. But the Gibbs reflective cycle is the model which includes the personal feeling as well and this helps the person in analysing their learning and views relating to the learning. Hence, because of this the Gibbs reflective cycle is being used in the present case. This is particularly because of the reason that this model includes the 6 different stages which are necessary to evaluate the learning. Thus, as a result of this the overall learning experience can be shared and the actual learning can be listed. In addition to this Gibbs reflective cycle is very helpful in comparing the learning with others as well. This is particularly because of the reason that the reflection is written in very structured format and because of this it can be compared to other people as well.
Role as a newly qualified healthcare practitioner
For the successful working of healthcare settings like the NHS, qualified people must be recruited. This is particularly necessary for the reason that when the people are qualified then they will be providing better services. Thus, as a result, this patient will be treated well and this will benefit the patient and the NHS as well. The reason underlying the fact is that when the proper and accurate services will be provided to the patients within NHS then this will improve the overall brand image of the healthcare setting as well (Torrens and et.al, 2020). While working as a newly qualified healthcare practitioner in NHS I found that working is very tough. This is particularly because of the reason that when the work needs to be done in such a big organization it results in developing some nervousness while working. Hence, I must take guidance from the existing experienced nurses and other staff.
Hence, with the help of the preceptorship, I would be learning how the subject knowledge is being put into practical work. This is very necessary for the reason that when the knowledge is taken from an experienced person then this will help in the effective application of the knowledge and this will result in better working of the company and providing the treatment as well. Further with the work it was evaluated that another major role of me as a newly qualified healthcare practitioner is to treat the patient well so that their problems and diseases can be solved easily and efficiently (Mukhalalati and Taylor, 2019). This is very necessary because the practitioner will not be working in providing treatment to the patient. Moreover, this will improve my efficiency as a healthcare practitioner and this will make the patients comfortable. The reason underlying the fact is that when the healthcare practitioner is good then automatically it will result in improvement of their health issues and they will be more comfortable with me. Thus, this will assist in helping the patient in developing much better and this will improve the overall working.
Moreover, another role includes participation in decision-making as well. This is particularly because of the reason that when the top management needs to make any decision, my participation is also important. This is because of the reason that I deal with patients and I know what changes need to be implemented within the process so that the work can be improved (Lysaght and et.al, 2019). This is necessary for the reason that I continuously work with the patient and I know what changes need to be implemented in the working so that the patients become more comfortable and get well soon. Thus, I share my suggestion relating to any of the changes which need to be implemented so that the overall working can be improved and the working efficiency is increased well. Furthermore, these suggestions will help in the effective development of policies in the healthcare setting so that the working can be improved and this will increase the working of the healthcare setting better.
In addition to this another major role identified for the better delivery of services to the patients includes providing education relating to the different prevention and cures and tips relating to living a better life for the patient. This is very necessary for healthcare practitioners they must effectively share their knowledge with the patient so that preventive actions and measures can be taken by the people while taking care of them. Thus, while working under the preceptorship, the development of this type of knowledge is also enhanced. The reason underlying the fact is that when effective and extra information is shared by the healthcare practitioner with the patients then it will assist them to connect with the patient and this will assist in improving the overall efficiency of treatment and the patient as well. The reason underlying the fact is that when the healthcare practitioner will be communicating softly and calmly with the patients then ultimately it will result in better and more effective working of the care setting.
Effectiveness of leadership, working in a team and communication about patient safety
In the current working, the role of healthcare workers is discussed and how well they are in a position to provide effective care and treatment to the patient. For healthcare workers, it is very necessary that they effectively deal with the patient so that the overall working of the healthcare setting is improved (Lee, 2020). Along with this when effective skills are present within the healthcare practitioner then it will help them to deal with the patient effectively. Thus, being a healthcare practitioner I must have a good set of skills being present so that I am in a position to work effectively with patients and provide them with better services. Hence, being a healthcare practitioner it is very necessary that all the different types of skills are present and also it is very necessary for me to develop other skills as well which are not present (Feijt and et.al, 2020). This is necessary because there are many different types of skills which are necessary to be present but I don't have them. Thus, in such a case I must develop these different skills.
With the evaluation of my personal experience, I learnt that having good leadership skills is very important to working within the healthcare sector. It is necessary because effective leadership skills assist in improving the efficiency and effective management of any kind of situation. This is very necessary because in case leadership skills are not present effectively then it will be impacting the efficiency of the working and treatment to a great extent. While working within healthcare effective leadership skills must be present. This is very necessary because when effective leadership is implemented automatically it will assist the healthcare practitioner in connecting with the patient. The leader has the capability of managing the team well. Thus, as a result of this, the effective management of leadership skills needs to be present. In case I am not in a position to manage the working well then I will not be providing better services to the patient.
For example, there was a situation wherein there was an emergency case of an accident, but there was no one with the patient. Without the signature on the documents, the patient was not treated. Thus, in such a case, I took the decision signed the documents by myself and sent the patient for the treatment. In case there would have been any delay in the treatment then the patient could have died. But due to effective leadership skills, I was in a position to manage the work and decided on instant provide treatment. Thus, as a result of this, the patient survived and was recovering effectively. Thus, to be a good healthcare practitioner effective leadership skills must be present so that any kind of situation can be managed by the person without any problem.
In addition to leadership, the most important skill to be present within the healthcare practitioner is effective communication. Communication is the only key which is helpful for the person to live and work effectively (Stroumsa and et.al, 2019). In case clear and concise communication is implemented then automatically the overall working will be improved. Within the healthcare sector, communication is very important to be followed. This is necessary because when the communication will not be clear and effective then it will impact the overall working and treatment of the patient. The importance of communication was learnt from a little bad experience which I had while working at NHS. The incident included the shift change where I had to leave as my shift was over (Palati and et.al, 2020). All the details relating to the patient and their medication were communicated to the nurse on the next shift. But mistakenly I forgot to communicate the dosage of the medicine to be given to the patient. Thus, as a result of this the new nurse on the shift gave the wrong dosage and resultantly the patient started to shiver and fainted. But luckily the doctor was on the round and an instant line of treatment was provided to the patient and he was normalised. As a result of this treatment the patient became normal and I realised the importance of effective communication.
With this incident, I learned that focusing on complete and concise communication is very necessary. This is because of the reason that in case anyone information is missed then it can impact the life of the person. In the present situation as well the patient might have suffered a lot in case the doctor was not present on time. Thus, with the help of this event, I learned that the effective use of communication is crucial and I not to work a little over improving my communication skills. This improvement in communication skills is very important for me to effectively work in the healthcare sector. In case I am not efficient in undertaking effective communication then it will be negatively impacting the overall working of the healthcare setting. Thus, the implementation of effective communication is very necessary as it will provide a much better working and will assist in improving the overall efficiency as well.
Further while working within the healthcare setting I also emphasised that effective team working also needs to be present. This is because of the reason that when effective teamwork is present then automatically it will increase the efficiency of working and the patient will be provided with better treatment. This is because of the reason that when effective treatment is provided it automatically results in better working efficiency and as a result of this the overall working is improved. Working in a team is necessary for the reason that it will help in improving the working capability. This is about the fact that when more people work together then there are more chances of learning new things better (Liu and et.al, 2020). This is very necessary when people work together then brainstorming takes place and as a result of this, the overall working is improved of the people. This was also learned from an experience which was faced by me while learning healthcare practices. We were provided a case study, of the patient, who was suffering from multiple diseases. Then, we were provided the task of providing the best solution to the patient so that he could recover well. This was a very tough task as the patient was having multiple diseases and treating such a patient was hard (Haleem and et.al, 2021). Thus, for the effective gaining of knowledge, it was assistive for me to work on this case study. The reason underlying the fact is that when effective treatment is provided to the patient then there will be enhancement in different types of skills which will further help me in developing the skills to operate in the healthcare industry.
Further with the self analysis it was evaluated that another necessary skill to work within the Healthcare sector is the effective decision making. This is particularly necessary because in case the decision making will not be quick then it will be impacting the care to be provided to the patient. The reason underlying the fact is that there are many emergency and contingent situations which need to be handled effectively. Thus, in order to handle these situations it is very necessary that quick decisions are taken. Further with the evaluation it was analysed that critical thinking skill needs to be present within the Healthcare practitioner. The reason underlying the fact is that when being a Health Care practitioner the critical thinking skill is not effective then it will be impacting the career to a great extent. Thus it is very necessary for me to have effective critical thinking skills. These skills are necessary in order to evaluate the situation of the patient and try to provide them with accurate and appropriate treatment. This critical thinking skill will help me in providing appropriate solution to the patient and try to improve their position. Thus, as a result of this working as a Healthcare practitioner will be improved and it will help me in developing other skills as well which are essential for improving the position and working within the Healthcare setting.
Along with this another major skill which is required for working within the health care setting and which I need to develop includes the effective time management. This is particularly necessary because the time is very important within the health care setting. In case there is any delay within the treatment for a second then it can impact the life of the person. Hence, it is very necessary for the Healthcare practitioner that they effectively manage the time and ensure that all the working are done within the time frame (Papagiannis and et.al, 2020). Thus, it is very necessary for me to develop the time management skills so that I am in position to take care of the patients effectively and efficiently. In case there will not be any delay from my side then it will be better and will help in effective treatment to the patient.
In addition to this another major skill which is required to be possessed by the health care practitioner includes the effective problem solving skill. Being the health care professional I have effective problem solving skills. This is particularly because of the reason that within the health care there is much different kind of problems which the person faces (Dineen-Griffin and et.al, 2019). Thus, it is very necessary for the effective working of the health care setting that the people posses the effective problem solving skills. This is necessary because when the problem solving skill will be present then automatically any of the problems will be solved in less time. Thus, it will help the health care practitioner not to provide effective treatment to the patients and it will definitely help them to solve the issues fast. Moreover, the effective problem solving skill will help the person in detecting the issues and trying to provide better solutions to them. Ultimately effective problem solving skill will help and assist the health care practitioner to work efficiently and will assist in improving the overall working.
Action plan
With the above evaluation it is evident that there is requirement of improving much different kind of skills. Thus, it is very necessary for me as a Healthcare practitioner to develop these skills so that no issues are faced (Gambhir and et.al, 2020). The development will plan for the different kind of issues is as follows-
Skill to be developed |

|
The success criteria for evaluating communication skill is that when I will be in position to communicate with any kind of person effectively and clear manner then it employees that I have learnt the communication skills well. |
Time management |
For the effective time management skills the action taken includes deciding the deadline before the actual deadline (Korkmaz and et.al, 2020). This is necessary because the deadline before the actual deadline will help in effectively accomplishing the task. |
The resources required includes the to do list. |
5-6 months |
The success criteria are when I am in position to accomplish the task before the actual deadline. |
Problem solving skill |
For developing the problem solving skill the major action required is to simulate the different kind of problem. This simulation will help the Healthcare practitioner to improve the problem solving skills effectively. |
The resources required includes team simulation environment where in the whole incident can be simulated. |
5 to 7 months |
The success criteria include evaluating and solving the problem correctly so that the required change can be implemented. |
Conclusion
In the end it is concluded that using the concept of preceptorship is necessary while working within the health care setting. This is particularly necessary because when the training is taken while working then it provides better learning and base to develop. Hence, it is very necessary for the Healthcare practitioner that they effectively try to improve the efficiency and learning. The above study reflected relating to the personal development and learning as a Healthcare practitioner. The above study evaluated that healthcare practitioner plays a crucial role within the Healthcare setting. Thus, it is very necessary that they effectively understand their role and perform the activity effectively. The major role includes in decision making providing education to the patients relating to daily care and many other different kind of role. These entire roles are necessary to be performing by the healthcare traditional. This is particularly essential because it will help the people to guide the patient effectively for improving their day to day life.
In addition to this it was evaluated there are many different kind of skills which are necessary to be present within the health care practitioner. These skills include a variety of range which includes effective leadership, communication, team working, time management and much different kind of skills. With the personal evaluation and skill or did it was evident that there are many different kind of skills which need to be learned by me as the Healthcare practitioner. These skills included time management communication problem solving and much other different kind of skills. With help of the effective action plan all these skills will be learnt well and will be helpful in improving the working within the health care setting.
