Professional development is associated with the enhancement of individual’s ability through learning & training to advance the career. For the professional development of workers the companies are organizing training sessions in order to increase and improve the knowledge and skills. In health and social care, professional development of staff members is crucial because it helps in enhancing confidence, hiring potential, developing skills, increase job opportunities and build networking opportunities. It is crucial for the managers to have effective communicate skills for providing information about the every event, updates and other significant topics to the staff members speedily and clearly. Apart from this, the objective of the essay is to increase the understanding of professional development and explore their development as a manager in health and social care.
TASK 1: Professional Development Plan
Assessment of own knowledge against standards and benchmarks
Being a manager is NHS it is crucial for me to develop the professional development plan effectively which help me in increase my knowledge and provide the learning opportunities. It is significant to reflect and assess my own performance aligned against the relevant standards and benchmarks. It is vital for me to contrasting the one’s results and practice with the expectations placed out in the national minimal standards (King et al. 2021). In UK, within HSC sector individual need to follow specific standards & principles. This mainly includes dignity & respect, compassion, responsive care, support and well-being. By evaluating own performance in against to such standards I have identified that am following the concept of equality while offering services to the patients. However, I need to improve my ability in relation to providing patient with prominent care and support as well. In addition to this, it is essential for me to staying up-to-date with any developments and changes in the UK’s social and health care standards.
SMART goals and targets for own professional development
Being a manager in the NHS it is crucial to develop the SMART goals and targets for my own professional development (Mlambo, Silén and McGrath, 2021).
To improve ability in relation to recognizing patient’s need within a quarter. To enhance proficiency level which support in giving quality care to the patients.
Determine suitable goals and targets to meet expected standards
In terms of specific, the goal is to find out patient’s need and offer relevant interventions. In the context of measurable, this can be evaluated by analysing patients’ needs over three months. In terms of attainable, use evidence based approach to provide best care to patients. In the relevant, the SMART goal is suitable because it focuses on offer best care to patients. In the terms of time based, there is deadline of three months (Baker et al. 2021).
Learning opportunities to meet objectives and reflect personal learning style
Determine the patient’s needs and improve the care are the key goals and objectives of the every manager in NHS. Being a manager, to meet my target goal and objectives I will take the help of the healthcare professionals and staff members to learn more about it. In the terms of learning style, I am a visual learner so I select training in the format of video instead of classroom.
Apply techniques to review progress toward personal and professional objectives
After setting the desired goals and objectives it is crucial to implement the techniques to preview the progress towards the personal and professional objectives. Being a manager in NHS it is crucial for me to continuous evaluate the skillsets and set goals for acquiring new skills or enhancing the existing ones (Tudor Car, et al. 2020). By setting the deadline, the managers can also measure the personal and professional objectives.
TASK 2: Critical Reflection Of Own Practice Within A Health And Social Care Environment.
Concept of professional development
Professional development is a process of enhancing and increasing the abilities of staff members through admittance to training & development opportunities at workplace. It is crucial for all the health & social care corporations to develop the skills and knowledge of the staff members professionally. Professional development assists in building and maintaining the morale of staff member’s. The key purpose of professional development is to provide opportunity of learn and gain new skills and knowledge to the professionals build their career. Professional development is crucial for all the staff members because it facilitates them to keep well-informed with the latest updates and trends (Rusilowati and Wahyudi, 2020). In the context of social and health care the professional development is significant because it helps in improving the patient care. Irrespective of their roles, the professional development helps in increasing the skills and knowledge which support them to provide better patient results.
In addition, professional development helps in increasing the morale of employees as well. If the health & social care companies support the continuing training and education to the staff members then it helps in enhance their skills as well as knowledge to provide better outcomes. If the staff members understand the best methods to provide care and are empowered to make effective decisions about the care. Professional development is significant within health and social care because it directly positively impacts the quality of care offered to the service users (King et al. 2021). By taking steps to keep informed of the latest trends and development in the industry the manager learn new skills that will enhance the performance and capabilities to provide high standard of care.
Ways of overcoming barriers to professional development
There are various barriers that are faced by the professionals while improving the skills and knowledge. To combat the time constraints, prioritize the professional development is the best way. For this purpose, focus needs to be placed on allocating the time in schedule for training and development activities. Being a manager in NHS, it is crucial for them to prioritize the professional development by determining the skills and knowledge that are needed to acquire. In addition to this, another way to overcome the barriers to professional development is take advantage of online learning (Mlambo, Silén and McGrath, 2021). It is regarded as convenient and cost-effective method to follow the professional development. There are several webinars, online courses and workshops that help in offering valuable learning opportunities to the managers of health and social care.
Micro learning is another way to overcome the barriers to professional development. It is one of the significant approaches of learning that majorly focuses on targeted and short lessons that can be completed quickly and speedily. Being a manager of social and healthcare this approach is useful for me in order to overcome a barrier to professional development. It is a great method to combat the time constraints and fit learning into the schedules (Sousa et al, 2022). This approach encompasses infographics, short-videos & podcasts which help in increasing the knowledge and enhancing the skills regarding their field. Furthermore, seeking out for funding opportunity is another way to overcome the barrier of professional development. Budget constraint can be main challenge to pursuing professional development. Apart from this, build a support system is another way to overcome the barriers which are face by the people whole developing their skills and knowledge professionally.

There are various sources that are available to the staff members and managers of health and social care. Formal and informal training is one of the key sources that are available to the people for their professional development. Training programmes both formal and informal has major contribution to the learning & personal development. Being a manager in health & social care, this source is useful for me to improve my skills and knowledge from which I am capable to provide better care to the patients (King et al, 2021). In addition to this, team meeting is one of the critical sources that can be used by the managers or staff members of HSC to develop their professional skills. This source provides chance to the professions in relation to learning something new along with their team members. Being a manager in social and health care I can adapt this source in order to improve my skills and knowledge regarding this particular field.
In this source, I can share ideas, views and discuss the common issue to bring the effective solutions. Along with this, another significant source for professional development is seminars. The managers can attend the seminars that contribute to the personal & professional development. This source is useful for the managers and staff members because it helps in providing the information that they can integrate in their personal and professional life to reach towards the desired goals and objectives. Furthermore, mentoring is another source of professional development. A mentor is someone who offers guidance, advice and supports the requirements to thrive professionally and personally (Rusilowati and Wahyudi, 2020). Mentors are playing an immersive role in improving the skills and increasing knowledge of the managers and staff members regarding relevant field.
Analyse factors to consider when selecting opportunities and activities for keeping knowledge and practice up to date
There are several factors that are crucial to consider when selecting the activities and opportunities for keeping knowledge and practice up-to-date. The relevance and quality of the activity is regarded as one of the significant aspect that is crucial to consider for keeping knowledge about recent trends. In the context of professional development, it is crucial for the people to have the activity is relevant to the work, well-presented and with good content. Additionally, delivery method of activity is another factor that is crucial to consider at the time of choosing the activities and opportunities for keeping practice and knowledge up-to-date (King et al. 2021). Whether it is offline and online it is crucial to ensure the format of the activities are appropriate. So provider can be confident that every learner will receive practice and knowledge in a method that suits them.
Another factor is time of the activity that is crucial to consider for keeping practice and knowledge updated. The timing of activity includes periodic, continuous or occasional, e.g. weekly, daily or monthly. In addition to this, duration of the activity is another crucial factor that is essential to recognize by the provider of activities regarding enhancing the skills and knowledge of the professionals in their respective fields. Another crucial element is popularity of the activity which is vital to recognize for keeping appropriate knowledge and practice .Whether activity is already well-established or new it is significant to have activity is appropriate for the learners needs. There are various reflective models that are used by the individual to reflect their own practice. Kolb’s and Gibb’s reflective cycle are considered as two significant models. Gibb’s model offers a structure to learning from the experiences. On the other hand, Kolb’s model highlights the significance of the reflective element in the experimental learning cycle. Along with this, Kolb’s reflective model has four phases such as reflective observation, concrete experience, active experimentation and abstract conceptualization (Ingham-Broomfield, 2021). While, Gibbs’ reflective model includes six stages such as description, feelings, analysis, evaluation, conclusion and action plan (Gibbs Reflective cycle, 2024). Both reflective models are used in learning circumstances.
Application of reflective practice techniques to improve own performance
It is crucial for the individuals to use reflective practice techniques in order to enhance their performance. Incorporating the reflective practice into enhance the own practice needs. Being a manager of NHS it is vital for me to set the clear learning goals and objectives that are aligned with my professional development which ultimately directly impacts my overall performance. It is crucial for the learners to select the significant reflective practice that suits the learning preferences and styles (Froneman, du Plessis and van Graan, 2023). Moreover, others feedback provides high level of assistance in developing competent learning plan which ensures more development.
Effectiveness of own reflective practice
Reflective practice is considered as significant tool for the development and continuous learning in the health and social care. It includes the process of actively thinking about and critically evaluating one’s actions with the aim of enhancing the future performance. Own reflective practices are effective because it helps in enhancing problem solving skills, facilitates continuous learning and self-awareness. Reflective practice helps people to become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses (Ng et al. 2020). It also helps in promoting the life-long learning. It allows people to learn from their experience and apply this knowledge in the future circumstances. Own reflective practice is effective because it helps in improving problem solving skills as well as encourage the people to think critically and identify the solutions to a problem (Atsma, Elwyn and Westert, 2020).

Principles of academic writing
Successful academic writing includes the capability to integrate the following concepts in the script. The key principles of academic writing are cohesion, clarity, consistency, logical order, unity, completeness, logical order, formality and variety. Cohesion includes the smooth flow & movement between the paragraphs and sentences. On the other hand, consistency may be defined as the uniformity of the writing style. It is significant to have the academic writing in the logical order and in this the writer tends to move general from specific. Completeness is another essential principle of the academic writing (Fang, 2021). In this, it is responsibility of the writer to eliminate the unnecessary and repetitive information. Another principle of academic writing is formality and it is vital to have academic writing in formal tone.

It is crucial for the individuals to implement the various techniques to review the own academic writing skills for the professional development. To assess the academic skill it is vital for the learners to review the spelling and grammar basics which make the writing easier to understand (Tursunovich, 2021). It is vital for the individuals to proofread the content and get feedback for review the own writing skill. To assess my academic writing skills it is important for me to take notes, interpreting and reading the articles various times before critiquing.

In the professional development plan it is vital for the people to set SMART goals and targets and implement the techniques to measure the progress towards the personal and professional objectives. For the professional development people use various sources such as formal and informal training, team meeting and seminars. Kolb’s and Gibb’s reflective cycle are regard as significant models of reflective practice that are used by the individual to reflect their own perception. Apart from this, clarity, cohesion, logical order, completeness etc., are the key principles of the academic writing.
