Discussion
Section 1: Effectiveness of communication
In the discipline of nursing, effective communication is essential for a variety of interactions including patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Communication, which is the verbal and nonverbal sharing of ideas, sentiments, and information, is the cornerstone of high-quality healthcare. Building trust and rapport with those they are caring for while providing safe, patient-centered care in the nursing profession depends on excellent communication (Raeissi et al. 2022). Effective communication between healthcare team members ensures that crucial patient information is shared. Sharing patient assessments, treatment plans, and pertinent observations is part of this since these things are crucial for delivering continuous and well-coordinated care. Effective communication reduces the likelihood of mistakes, misunderstandings, and oversights that could endanger the safety and well-being of patients.
The "6Cs" in nursing, a system that emphasizes six basic principles for providing compassionate treatment such as Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment, include effective communication as a crucial component (Raeissi et al. 2022). These fundamental principles direct nurses as they provide patients with comprehensive care that addresses their physical, emotional, and psychological needs. Without the help of communication, the patient would feel that the nurses do not pay attention to them or think that there is no care for them, which may affect the mental peace, and thus there will be a slow recovery in the patients. The Department of Health and social care helps people to live more independently, healthier, and live for longer life. In order to exchange clear information and provide information on the care needs it is important to communicate better.
Depending on the healthcare environment and the patient demographic, there could be different considerations specific to nurse communication. For instance, excellent communication is especially important in mental health nursing. In order to build trust with patients dealing with mental health issues, nurses in this sector must use sensitive and therapeutic communication approaches (Raeissi et al. 2022). The Mental Capacity Act of 2005 and the Mental Health Act of 1983 could be applicable in specific circumstances, directing nurses in talking with and making choices in the best interests of patients lacking mental capacity. In the United Kingdom "The Code," outlines professional standards for nursing that reflect the NMC's belief that communication is at the heart of nursing practices (nmc.org.uk, 2023). In order to establish and maintain relationships based on trust The Code places a strong emphasis on the value of effective communication.
Section 2: Reflection
In this section, I will depict an instance of care from my nursing practice, concentrating on maintaining patient confidentiality and utilizing Gibbs' reflective approach. I will refer to the patient in this reflection as "Mr. Smith" to preserve his confidentiality.
Describe
I was tasked with providing Mr. Smith, who underwent significant abdominal surgery, post-operative care during the episode of care. My responsibilities included monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and ensuring his overall comfort and well-being during his recovery. It was essential to protect Mr. Smith's privacy and confidentiality throughout the care process as he was in a vulnerable circumstance. The communication with Mr. Smith helped me to understand the problems he was facing after the surgery and thus I was able to help him with the solutions and take extra care of him. I made sure that he took his medicines on time and communicate whenever He face problems and pain in the abdominal area. My responsibilities also included informing the doctors whenever the patients face any severe pain due to any reason. I was assigned to communicate with patients, analyze their physical and emotional needs, and provide counseling health care education to the patients.
Feelings
I felt many emotions such as happiness, joy, sadness, nervousness, and many more. I tried my best to fulfill all the responsibilities that I was assigned. There was a feeling of nervousness while communicating with patients, as it was my first time working as a nurse. Effective communication helped to overcome the problems that were faced while fulfilling the responsibilities (Raeissi et al. 2022). Communicating effectively helped me to understand the problems and difficulties that the patient faced. I also realized that there is a need to comfort the family members of the patients. Nervousness while working creates disturbances in the surroundings and people around (King et al. 2021). The families of the patient face emotional breakdowns while watching their family members in a poor state of health (Karaca and Durna, 2019). I felt sometimes that I use complicated languages that make it difficult for the patient to understand what I speak. Hence, I think that I should use plain language more in order to develop my communication skills. I realized the strong and weak points in my communication that I need to develop further.
Evaluation
I understood the need for effective communication in order to deliver solutions to problems and ease the mind of patients. I recognized the strengths in my communication and the areas that I have to develop to communicate better. I introduced the responsibilities that were assigned to me and I also asked the patients to inform me whenever they feel problems or pain or find any difficulty. Actively interacting with the patients helps to understand the concerns and needs of the patients (Gutierrez-Puertas et al. 2020). Effective communication helped the patient to understand my role and be aware of the responsibilities that are needed to take care of the patients.
I realized the weakness in my communication skills, as sometimes I was bad at comforting the patients and their family members. Another weakness that I had was I lacked patience while communicating as I started to panic whenever the patient would say that they were feeling difficulties or pain. Weaknesses create problems in taking responsibility and impact negatively (Männistö et al. 2020). Developing communication skills in comforting patients and their family members is necessary, as these are very important while working as a nurse (Lotfi et al. 2019). Patients and their family members often feel emotional breakdowns as they think that they will not be able to recover completely ever (Chaboyer et al. 2021). I also have to develop communication patiently and listen to their problems first. Listening and then working or speaking according to the needs of patients is very important in order to communicate better and work efficiently. I also faced problems with Mr. Smith as I started to give suggestions related to health and I noticed that sometimes I used complex speech while explaining some situations and things related to the health of Mr. Smith, assuming he would understand. I realized that there was a need of using plain language in order to make the patients more comfortable and understand the words that I speak.
Analysis
I have gained insights into effective communication in order to maintain patient confidentiality. I realize the importance of effective communication as communication not only helps to solve problems but also creates a better understanding between the patients and the nurse. Effective communication helps to ease the mind of the family members and help them understand the needs of the patients (Von et al. 2020). It also ensures that there are fully comprehended, confidentiality measures in place to protect the privacy of the patients. I have learned that each patient has their individual needs and communicating with each of them is necessary in order to understand their individual needs and preferences. Communicating builds trust between the patients and the nurse and thus helps in making the patients more comfortable with the place (Van et al. 2020). I recognize the need to improve my communication skills and especially practice avoiding complicated speech and using plain language so that they would not face problems understanding what I speak. I also realized the value of feedback that the patients, peers, and mentors give as that helps me to improve in the skills where I lack. The feedback also offers valuable insights into areas where I can further develop my communication skills.
Conclusion
I understood the importance of communication in order to understand and treat patients effectively. I recognized the strengths and weaknesses that I have in my communication skills. Effective communication helps in solving problems in nursing (Bergman et al. 2021). In order to communicate effectively I have to learn patience while the patients speak, understand, and then react. I also have to learn to comfort the patients and family members in order to ease their minds and use plain language so that the patients can understand whatever I speak. Communication helps in taking the right decision as per the requirement of the situation (Karlsson et al. 2019). I realized the areas where I have to develop my communication skills.
Section 3: Strategies
With the help of the experience, I realized my strength and weaknesses in my communication skills while working as a nurse. I am working on my communication skills and planning strategies that will help me in the future. Firstly, I would interact more with patients and understand their problems. Communicating effectively helps patients with their difficulties and problems (Brødsgaard et al. 2019). I will also learn to identify the weakness in my communication without the help of the feedback as some people may give wrong feedback too. I will keep track of my progress in communication skills and practice more until I reach the desired level in my communication. With the help of my strengths, I would make the patients feel more comfortable while communicating with the place and me.
I would take every advantage possible to learn and enhance my communication skill. Communication styles also affect the patient and their behavior towards the nurse (Alshehry et al. 2019). I will seek feedback from patients and the people around me in order to understand the qualities I lack. I will also actively work on the qualities I lack for being a nurse in order to deliver better service to patients. Additional training and professional development opportunities help in developing the required skills (Jones, 2019). I would take often classes and training for both communication and nursing in order to be a better nurse. I will also seek the help of seniors and the experienced nurses around me that would help me in improving my communication skills. I would prefer observing and learning from senior nurses and experienced colleagues. Volunteering in team meetings or patient support groups would also help me in enhancing my communication skills. Feedback from the Practice Supervisor and practice assessor helps in understanding the places of lack in communication (Perry et al. 2022). They also provide guidance and valuable insights on the places of improvement in order to overcome the challenges that may arise while communicating. I will also try my best to identify my potential and apply them while communicating. Understanding the impact of our speech on the patients and people around plays an important role (Chegini et al. 2020). The patient may suffer mentally if the impact of our speech is negative, thus it is important for me to understand the way I speak and its impact.
Conclusion
With the help of this essay, it can be concluded that communication plays an important role while nursing. Effective communication is required in order to understand the patient's difficulties and provide them with effective solutions. It is also necessary to understand the impact of communication on the patients and their reactions. Communicating with the family members and the patients effectively helps to comfort them and ease their minds. In order to develop communication skills a nurse should take effective training and practices. The nurses should also keep a check on their communication skills and practice to enhance them. Feedback from seniors and patients can also help to keep commutation skills in check.
