Introduction To Learning And Development Assignment
Coaching is the process through which the performance and skills of others are improved by valuable suggestion and support. This assignment includes the role of the L&D coach in improving the performance of the employees. These will also include how an L&D coach could enhance its ability of performance by self-assessment tools. This will also include a personal development plan which will help in attaining the goals. The Gibbs model of reflection will be used through which I will share my experience of developing the skill of L&D coach.
Coaching self-assessment tool
To identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and the threat which are associated with the individual. I have done the self-assessment and identified the following factors about me.
Strength: I had identified that I have good leadership skills which can be helpful in guiding the employees in working according the goals. I can create a good interpersonal relationship with the other so this will help in improving the superior and subordinate relation by gaining the trust of the employs. I am enthusiastic and have a positive mindset which help the employees in increase their motivation and easy problem solving.
Weakness: I am short tempered which sometime employees not freely share their opinion and view with me which hampered the process of coaching. This made employ not take imitative in completing the task because of the fear of failure. Lack of confidence while communicate make it difficult to clearly describe my point of view to the employees. I do not pay enough time in maximizing my strength which in long term hampers my personal growth.
Opportunities: As I am working in Tesco which is multinational company in which I can take part in the training sessions which are conducted by the organization. This will help in improving my exiting skills and developing skill in different areas as well. I can take feedback from the experience people working in the organization and identify the areas where there is need to bring changes. There are various other coaches in the organization I should observe them and evaluated this performance and the impact of the same on the employees. This will help in developing new techniques which is more effective in provide coaching.
Threats: There are various barriers which I faced while providing coaching. In the organization if the workload increases the employees are not provided with enough time to complete their development session which hampers the effectiveness of the coaching. The employees themselves are not interested in the coaching and less awareness regarding the importance of the coaching made my duties not fulfill in an efficient manner. Lack of support from the seniors and the management team in the involvement of the L&D session also decreases the potency of the coaching.
Three areas for development
To become an effective learning and development coaches I need to improve my communication skills, leadership skills and the critical thinking. This will help in achieving my personal goals and help in become effective in sharing my knowledge and experience with other which leads to improving in the performance of them.
Communication skill: It is refer to as the skills related to the development of the effective listening and speaking skill which can help in sharing our view and understand the view of others (Importance of communication in the coaching, 2023). For an individual working in L&D field it is various crucial to develop this skill for improving the performance of the employees. My responsibility is to support them in identify the goals and the ways through which they can attain this. The importance of the communication skills are as follow:
Critical thinking: It is refer to as the skills which aim at effective evaluation and analysis the information collected and come to a judgment after collecting all he aspect (Van Der Zanden, et.al, 2020). In the field of L&D coach critical thinking is very crucial in understanding the actual needs and the desire of the individual and proving training sessions through which this could be fulfilled. The importance of critical thinking in the role of L&D is explained covering following points:
- While providing training session, the employees should understand the message in the same context and no communication barrier could impact this.
- Good communication skills will help me in explaining the employees al the opportunities which are available to them (Kim and Park, 2020). This will also help in motivate the employees in taking part in coaching session which can help in improving their knowledge.
- This helps in identify the personal goal of the employees by listening to opinion. This will help in clearly define the same to the management so that effective step could be taken.
- This will help m in identify the needs, strength, weakness and the belief of the employees in the correct ways and identify the motivators through which there performance could be improved.
- By developing the skills of critical thinking I will able to plan the training session and the appropriate solutions through which there needs could be fulfilled.
- This also helps in identify the opportunities available through which the performance could be improved.
Leadership skills: It is the skills which I used to influence and guide otter individual or group of people to carry out the work (Yuan, et.al, 2019). There are various importances of the leadership skills in proving effective coaching which are follows:
- By developing these skills I will be able to improve the involvement of the employees in the coaching process by motivating them.
- Strong interpersonal relationship should be important between the coach and the employees. Through effective leadership style I focus on gaining the trust of the employees so that communication could be improved.
- Through effective leadership skill I will be able to select the suitable learning strategy which is fulfilling company's needs.
Personal development plans
It is plan which is prepared to identify the path through which the set objective could be achieved (Panchal and Riddell, 2020). I have created the plan which will include the entire coaching model and their implication which will help in improving the skills. GROW Model of coaching will be used to improve the efficiency of the skills and identify suitable ways through which this could be improved.
Communication skills: for improving the communication and the increased the confidence to commute in the public meeting GROWS will be implemented in the following way:
- Goal: In this I will identify the goal which I want to achieve. As I want to improve my communication skills, I need to focus on improving the skills related to listening and speaking. So the goal is to become effective communicator.
- Reality: under this step I will analysis the current stage and the ability to influence other. In this I will identify the strength and weakness which I need to overcome for achieving the goals.
- Obstacles: under I will identify the actuarial barrier in the path of the success. This may be related to the difference in languages or cultural. I usually provide excessive information to the other which may be causing to confusion in their understanding and creating barriers.
- Will: under this step I will identify the suitable action which I need to undertake for the achieving the goals by eliminating the barriers. It have understood that before communicate with the employees I should understand the other culture and I will focus on the amount of information that need to be provide to reduce confusion.
Critical Thinking: The following steps will be followed which will help in achieving the goal by implementing the model:
- Goal: In this the goal has been created as to improve the critical thinking skills which will help in deeper understanding of the issues and behavior.
- Reality: I have identified that before forming a judgment I need to analysis all the factors impacting the issue. I lack the problem-solving and the effective analysis of the problem skills which hamper my efficiency.
- Obstacle: under this step I have identified the am over reliance on emotion and feeling. This did not allow me to identify various other factors in the issues.
- Will: For this I will focus on gaining more information and become self aware regarding the environment. I will focus on finding various evidence and the factors which are impacting the situation before final judgment.
Leadership skills: To improve the skill of leadership I will implement the GROW model in following ways which will help in increasing the skills:
- Goal: the coach needs to influence so that they could work according the goal of the organization. This describes my goal to become an effective leader.
- Reality: I have identified form my previous session that I am not able to motivate employees to work accordingly. This means that the leadership skills which I am implementing are less effective.
- Barrier: As I identify that my communication and critical thinking approach is not effective this is indirectly affecting the leadership skills.
- Will: For this, I will try to improve my communication and the skill to motivate others. I will focus on implementing democratic style in leadership to gain the trust and enhance the involvement of the employees.
Conclusion
Through this report it has been conclude that coaching plays an important role in the life of the individual. This also pays emphases on how the ability of the coach is important to improve the performance of efficiency. I have identify that leadership, communication and the critical thinking skills need to be improve which help in improving my skills. The GROW model of coaching has been implemented to develop following skills.
