A balanced approach to risk management is essential because it recognises the value of learning and growth via managed risks while enabling the detection and mitigation of possible dangers. Excessive limitations impede children's ability to explore and grow, which affects their capacity to build resilience and problem-solving abilities. Finding a balance between safety and healthy risk-taking allows kids to overcome obstacles, gain confidence, and acquire important life skills. This method promotes holistic development in a safe and encouraging environment while protecting well-being(Letens et al., 2008).
EYE23-3.3- Describe how health and safety risk assessments are monitored and reviewed.
Risk assessments related to health and safety are kept under observation by designated staff members through frequent checks, inspections, and monitoring. Practitioners keep an eye on routines to make sure that safety protocols are being followed, and they take swift action when they find any deviations. Regular evaluations evaluate the performance of current risk controls, modifying protocols in response to changing conditions or flaws found. A collaborative approach to risk management is fostered by staff members' ongoing communication, and awareness is reinforced through frequent training sessions. The continuous assessment is facilitated by incident reporting and feedback systems, which enable improvements to the entire safety framework. The efficacy and currency of health and safety risk assessments in the childcare environment are ensured by regular evaluations(Gul, 2018).
EYE23-3.5- Reflect on your own role in the setting when managing risk.
Performing routine risk assessments, putting safety procedures into place, supervising kids during activities, maintaining a secure environment, raising staff knowledge, and encouraging open communication are all part of my job as a practitioner in risk management. I actively support preserving a balance between kid development possibilities and safety(Aven, 2016).
Case study
Flower Garden Nursery regularly takes children to visit the local library. A risk assessment has been done which covers taking the children out in the rain as well as the sun and also assesses the risks according to the ages of the children being taken out. The outing requires children to cross the road at a pelican crossing. Today, roadworks have started for a week. The pelican crossing is out of action.
- Why is a new risk assessment needed?
The closing of the pelican crossing significantly alters the outing's risk profile, necessitating a fresh risk assessment. To guarantee the children's safety during the expedition, the current roadworks changes the typical conditions and add new possible risks, thus a revaluation is required.
- Identify the potential hazard now the pelican crossing is closed.
The greater danger of crossing the road is one possible hazard brought on by the closed pelican crossing. Children and practitioners may have to take another route if the usual crossing site is closed, or they may encounter difficulties like heavy traffic, poor visibility, or strange road conditions, which increases the chance of accidents.
- What might be the result of the risk assessment?
The results of the risk assessment may lead to changes in the protocols for crossing the road while the roadworks are underway. These changes may include using different, safer crossing locations, providing more supervision, or even thinking about delaying the outing until the pelican crossing is back in service. The goal is to put policies in place that lessen the additional dangers brought about by the shutdown, guaranteeing the kids' security and welfare while they attend the neighbourhood library.
