Introduction of Reflection on Personal & Interpersonal Skills Developed as a Practicing Social Worker
The discussion is made to reflect upon the skills I developed as a practicing social worker. Efficient communication skills are the vital components of a social worker’s profession. Studying for the BA Hons Social work degree was a purposeful decision that I came to throughout my preceding education. Opportunity I acquired professional skills that not only add to my personal growth but also offer an opportunity to add to society. The present learning procedure allows me to build up efficient communication within the field of study, and also among those social subjects which will be significant in my career (Main, 2013). In doing so, it helps the employee to better appreciate his or her feeling and the consideration processes that these emotions come from. The objective of this essay is to provide my reflection, connecting it to my emotional intelligence in the area of social relationships, flexibility, tolerance, self-management, and emotional consciousness, and my future strategy and goals for a BA Hons Social work degree.
Critical evaluation on development of interpersonal and communication skills
Emotional intelligence can be defined as being capable to control one’s own emotions, while at the same being able to recognize and understand the emotions of others. This is a significant skill to have inside the realm of social work put into practice because as a social worker, I have to work with people on all levels which includes mezzo, micro and macro which frequently experience some of the most emotional periods of their life. For me, managing myself has always been quite easy, as I am brutally self-governing and would somewhat be left unaccompanied to supervise myself than work below someone else. Though, the toughest part of this particular concern for me is accepting my failure or mistake (Mishra and Mishra, 2020). While I cherished learning to be more self-governing when it comes to academics and working when I started my social work, I also believe that I became harder on myself when I did not get the correct grade or the correct field placement. One of the stuff I think I require to work on most is finding an equilibrium between taking accountability for my measures and behaviors and being moreover hard on myself for those measures and behaviors. This, like my suppleness, comes back to arousing intelligence relating to my self-discipline surrounding my own troublesome emotions, as I can effort through my under-achievements without obscuring my thinking, and carry on towards my targets and goals. As a part of this educational program, student study a broad range of methodical disciplines, both precise and humanitarian (Travers, et. al. 2015). It has enabled me to identify my academic strength and areas for expansion; and assisted me to start exploring my self, assumptions, values, and personal and cultural narratives. The incorporation of new information and skills in the planned areas directly contributes to efficient communication within the area of study. For a social worker, the aptitude to find a common language with an assortment of people is important, because it is through well-established communication that a professional acquires an absolute picture of what is occurring in a particular society (Koprowska, 2020). The capability to identify the essential changes for a convinced group of people is key for an expert in my field. Accordingly, it is possible to identify a directly proportional relationship between the winning incorporation of the course knowledge and the experience of a social worker. While the achievement of professional skills is critical for being a flourishing specialist, there is one more aspect that is necessary to the job which includes emotional intelligence. It is the ability to recognize and understand interlocutor, grasp mood, and react to them punctually. It seems my soft skills in this field of social work I constantly permit myself to be an efficient employee being able to help out people. It is significant to note that this area of study involves working with people in complex life situations. Consequently, in addition to using the pre-written scenario of performance in a given circumstance, it is significant to understand who asks for help. According to my thoughts, and also my life knowledge, I have a quite high stage of empathy, which I believe is a vital quality for this field. For me, pursuing a social worker is, foremost not a job to develop the career ladder, but a prospect to assist the community and by this means the people’s life improved. In this, I observe my strength in the circumstance of communication in this work (Seden, 2005). The social worker occupation provides an extensive range of growth opportunities. First of all, the areas of individual growth are connected with communication skills, the development of which will permit us to resolve more and more difficult problems and contribute to larger projects. By rising communication skills, the social worker has the chance to work not only at the restricted level but also to contribute to national as well as international projects. In the future, such knowledge can be tremendously useful for global forums and projects. Nowadays, there are big numerals of foundations like UNICEF, which assist diverse groups of the population in complex situations (Howard, et. al. 2003). As a result, improving communication skills will permit me to achieve new goals and develop knowledge.
Gibbs's reflective cycle
It is a theoretic model that encourages me to think about my experience thoroughly which had encountered during a precise situation, incident, or activity. This frequently made me realize from my own experience the things they require to progress upon by giving it more concentration. Gibbs's reflective impacts of an event by creating me aware of my actions to better adjust them. This sequence has 6 steps which include feelings, description, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan. In the descriptive stage, I found out brief facts about the circumstances and the experience or event to set the prospect and given context. In the second step, I measured what I was thinking and what I felt through my previous experience. In the step of evaluation, I looked neutrally at both positive and negative aspects of the experience and I describe key fundamentals that went particularly well. I also measured anything that did not go well. Analysis attempt helps me to explain why the experience was negative or positive and should form the major section of my reflection (Adeani, et. al. 2020). Taking into account points made in the preceding steps and recognizing any factors which helped me. The next conclusion step involved my focus on what I have learned and the skills I have developed as a social worker. I grow in confidence as a consequence of this practice and realized that it is acceptable to make some mistake in the beginning stage.
Example: Areas of opportunity and improvement for a practicing social worker
As a social worker, I experience that I must communicate efficiently ever since the goal of my occupation is to help others. To recognize how I can help out, I have to be capable to recognize how to converse with people from diverse backgrounds and appreciate their viewpoints. For this reason, an opportunity for progress for me is in advance a better understanding of the culture that affects communication and what I as a community worker can do to be extra self-confident. Culture includes principles and norms that are essential to an individual’s self, as they are toughened by the society where this individual grows up (Bogo, 2018). Therefore, understanding the dissimilarity between diverse cultural groups and their perception of life, their principles, and their attitude can advance my ability to communicate with these various groups in different areas. By the end of the semester, I am competent to look back and reflect on the educational and personal efforts I have formed to improve my interpersonal and communication skills. Eventually, I was hoping to turn out to be a more improved sustaining healthy relations, involved listener, and sustain stress-free way of life. After carrying out the pre-assessment and the objective progress reports, I was capable to effectively reflect on the improvement I have finished this semester (Puscas, et. al. 2021). Because of this essay, I have learned that people consider that I effortlessly get distracted by things departing on around me while listening, which others can find offensive or disrespectful. For this reason, I made sure to fix this. Another characteristic of development is not only listening when somebody talks by assess other basics of a conversation. The need for such understanding and appropriate communication skills needs in one’s incapability to communicate that information, in that way causing a damaging effect on clients. The ability to get data or information and understands the non-verbal signal that can communicate more than words, in some cases. For me, the capability to recognize non-verbal communication means being capable to recognize if the customer is feeling comfortable or if I am supposed to work on constructing trust to make sure that I can assist them. In general, for me, the chance to attain a more solid consideration of communication and a way of improving my communication skills is necessary since, as a social worker, I will rely significantly on the capability to assemble and understand information (Gunderman and Brown, 2012).
Conclusion
Over the semester I have learned a lot of innovative phases of social work that include assistance to grow deeper in my thoughtfulness of what social work is actually about. This path has trained me in things that will help me to become an improved individual and will also assist me with my prospect of working with kids. Self-reflection is an important skill to work in social work. We require appreciating how we are, and our community position influences everything we do with social work. My viewpoint and standards would help me be a social employee since I have a concerned judgment, and character that permits me to be unbiased and to pay attention to people. I value all financial and social background. I strongly consider that everybody has a right to have their influence.
Prior, I took this course which genuinely increases my curiosity for my future career for becoming a simple school teacher, but through taking this course I recognized that I am concerned about becoming a social employee as well. Being expose to the substance in this course, if I turn out to be a social worker in the future I would be concerned with working with anxious youth and imprisoned youth, to assist put them on the correct path. To build that they do not end up spend their lives continuously being difficult or spending their life being sheltered up (Canda, et. al. 2019). I have always been interested in public who are imprisoned and inspection documentaries about prisons and functioning with kids but the address for ‘The career of social work’ occupied my interests even further because during the lecture child defense and the illegal impartiality system were converse about, not in immense aspect but it still connects my benefit because throughout that moment I realize if I become a social employee I would desire to work with anxious youth and imprisoned youth. I would be working with the kids to make sure that they endeavor to have the finest life possible for themselves. Every day, social workers must converse with customers to gain data, communicate critical information and make significant decisions. Without efficient communication skills, I cannot be able to attain or communicate that information, thereby causing damaging effects on customers. An important portion of me as a social worker involves interviewing customers and other parties concerned with a customer’s care (Richards, et. al. 2005). To offer the most efficient services and counseling, I should build up the skill to listen with awareness and concentration to details. This may engage learning to take comprehensive notes to simply remember what was said later. Efficient listening also involves paying concentration to how the social worker reacts as the customer is speaking. Self-awareness and use of self instincts are key sections in my social work performance. Depending upon how it integrates their being and complementary experiences, thoughts, emotions, and awareness into the helping occupation has a thoughtful impact on whether that incorporation is positive or negative, chiefly when it comes to the relationship with my customers.
