Introduction Of Assisting A Patient With Catheter Care
- Self-reflection is significant in allowing nurses to analyse their overall experiences during practice and later incorporate the changes within their future practices to enhance the outcomes.
- Healthcare professionals have required encouragement for providing effective care to patients based on evidence which essentially relies on prior studies and experiences.
- Self-reflection helps in the overall enhancement of the healthcare professional through individual assessment of goals.
- The present paper includes a self-assessment and reflection based on the medical experiences of the healthcare professionals who assisted patients in catheter care.
The various scales and knowledge regarding the assistance required for patients with urinary retention will be discussed and analyzed in this reflection. The application of knowledge and skill of the patient, family members, and nurses will be discussed respectively.
- The assignment will follow Driscoll's reflective model (2006) by dividing it into three sections for effective knowledge on the evaluation of the overall process.
- This process of reflective analysis is significant in evaluating the issues and further mitigation methods for neutralizing the same through professional advancements.
- Mrs X 60-year-old patient admitted with complexities to urinating and discomfort in the lower abdomen.
The patient had diabetes as well with three years of prior medications and 3 months of complexity with urination. The confidentiality of the patient will be maintained throughout the study by not disclosing personal details of the same.
What
- Initially, a quick intervention was carried on to ease the symptoms which accompanied the urinary retention and Non-invasive therapy was favoured over invasive therapy due to the fear of ill effects on the patient.
- The patient was in stress due to the introduction of a catheter into their urethra which is estimated to have increased the depression. Eventually, to avoid this comfort trauma and risk of urinary tract infections, it was recommended to remove the invasive catheter.
- The medication applied was estimated to relax the muscle within 12 hours however it to 48 hours. This was due to poor decision-making without prior consultations and a lack of knowledge of interventions which brought stress to the patient and family members.
As a result, they lost trust in the nursing home's care from their observations. The facility which was for providing care eventually ended up doing the contrary. My colleagues and seniors were disappointed in my failure to consult them during patient care. The actions negatively impacted my performance appraisal and led to my transfer as well.
- I experienced guilt and blamed myself for the mishap that highly affected the patient, family, colleagues, my institution and my profile as a healthcare expert.
- I face difficulty in coping with the situation but somehow accepted and acknowledged the mistakes by apologizing for the mishap that might have arguably spoiled the name and image of the healthcare institution which I worked for.
- The unsatisfied family members had even requested my transfer but were contained after assurance. This situation led to a change in the limits of which the caregivers practised in an organization.
From then on that patient was always scared and asked plenty of questions during the treatment and even demanded to remove me from her care. My action has the potential to hinder the accomplishment of my future as well as my healthcare goals.
- Unclear guidelines and hospital policies lead to the mishap as the policies and guidelines are effective in determining the rules of the nurses in particular organizations which differ from place to place.
- Here the caregiver was born to review the client by consulting the physician before taking any actions.
- The culture of discouraging the usage of invasive urine catheters at the hospital discouraged my decision along with shortages of lubricating gels and catheters.
- Moreover, the nursing home management failed to provide regular medical education to the caregivers to keep them updated on various ongoing trends of client care.
In my opinion, understaffing physicians also leads to the wrong decisions as the adequacy of senior physicians is significant in minimizing errors with increased supervision. Lastly, the organization was overwhelmed and this required me to save time by attending to other patients as well.
So what
- As per Driscoll's reflective model, I monitored the draining system of a patient and monitored lab reports urine reports
- I also encourage her to exercise and regular medication by developing a chart history
- I provide proper medication regularly by setting up timers and using empty drainage bags regularly
- I read the medication history and checked the catheter at least three times before use following the manufacturer's instruction
S.N: In the previous section, it has been shown that I adopted key actions for this patient, I monitored the draining system of a patient and monitored lab reports and urine reports regularly. I also provide medicine regularly for maintaining empty drainage bags regularly
- I believe that assisting catheter care skills help me to maintain patient sterile urine sample and maintain safety
- As per my experience, these skills help to enhance my catheter care knowledge and I build a routine chart of medicine that helps me to provide sterile urine sample
- I also use these skills for her health care and developing her mental health growth
S.N: According to these skills I also believe that catheter care skills can develop my knowledge regarding regular safety maintenance of disinfection and build a chart for urine collecting reports. These skills also helped me to check urine infection levels and also followed mutual support to build safety management.
- Catheter care skills also enhance knowledge about the management of urinary infection adherence and develop infection safety management (Wondmieneh et al. 2020)
- I also believe that these skills helped me to encourage her regular drainage bag system and set an appropriate infection safety
- I think Catheter care skills can change patients' urinary health status and I also consulted with doctors about medicine doses as per health status
- According to Lee and Quinn, (2019), catheter care skills help to reduce the infection errors of a patient and develop health status
S.N: As per my experiences, I believe that catheter care skills help me to change a patient's health status and also enhance my knowledge regarding medicine doses and infection safety management that is appropriate for this patient. On the other hand, I also think that, based on my catheter care skills I monitored her urinary timetable regularly and changed patient safety by consultation with a doctor.
- Catheter care skills also impact my health care services and I also monitor health issues and maintain urinary infection to decrease patient infection levels
- I also follow these skills to identify patients' drug history and drug allergies that build understanding about proper medicine effects on patients
- As per these skills I read medicine records at least three times before administrative medication and avoid activity to interrupt medication to this patient
- These skills also impact my nursing practices and increase my knowledge about errors in the catheter care system as well as how medication decreases the health issues of a patient
S.N: Catheter care skills help me to build awareness of urinary infections in patients and I must read medicine records as well as catheter care drained bag at least three times and also check the drug allergies history of a patient. These skills help me to provide suitable healthcare services to a patient and these skills impact my patient's care by decreasing her health issues.
- Catheter care skills increase my experiences and help me in patient care when patients suffer infection due to a lack of regular catheter care
- I check the timely catheter and use gloves during drained urine as well as wear a new catheter
- I also focus on prior medication timely for diabetes issues and check daily health status
- Based on these skills I think I build safety management during Catheter care for decreasing infection and helps me to collect urine samples for diagnosis
S.N: According to Catheter care skills, I showed that the patient was disappointed with the Catheter and depressed with it, in this time I encouraged the patient and built an appropriate health care system. I also followed safety management and wore gloves during catheter care which reduces infection.
- I faced a few issues in the catheter care system that I think changed by new strategy or skills such as following medicine directions and keeping a list of all steps catheter care system of the patient
- Using new gloves at a time that strategy also helps me maintain infection safety for a patient
- Another important new strategy that I will adopt in my nursing practices such as drug fact labels and effects of catheter care
S.N: During my patient care, I forgot to provide a catheter to my patient and its effects on her health and develop infection. I think the new catheter care strategy will help me to further patient care and I believe that following the medicine lists strategy is the most important skill. On the other hand, I will check drug fact labels and effects that help me to appropriate medication on time.
- I also follow the right steps, the right time and the right route of the catheter care system that helps patient care
- I develop my catheter care skills for future healthcare services and I will build my experiences
- I also developed another important strategy such as the “Coping personal records strategy” that will help me to remind patients of catheter care time and drug doses
S.N: As per my experiences, I need new catheter care skills that will help me further patient health care services. Important strategies such as following the right steps, right time and right route strategy, developing a copping personal drug records strategy and following the drug facts labels strategy.
Now what
- Next time I will utilize my inter-professional learning in family-centered and patient care.
- Knowledge and experience that I have gained from the management of elderly patients diagnosed with urinary retention will be used later on to avoid past mistakes shortly.
- I would surely attend to the patient and provide care to the respective patients only after proper consultation and instructions from senior physicians and family members.
I will go on to discuss the treatment options available with the family and the patient together to decide the best intervention on the basis of the goals of care. Additionally, I would inform the physician regarding the drugs prescribed to attain the required changes in management and suggested therapy. I came to provide the best nursing care to the concerned patients by collaborating with other physicians and healthcare providers. It is my concern to attend to the patient requirements by considering the cultural emotional and social well-being of the patients along with their families.
- The experience gained from the discussed situation will be used by me in my future practices to avoid any rear currents of the previous mishap due to my negligence and lack of knowledge.
- The realization that family and patient must be kept at the center of healthcare delivery actions based on emotional well-being is going to help me in attending the future patients.
- I will involve myself actively in continuous learning and research to be updated with ongoing trends related to patient care as this will help me be aware of the changing practices and norms related to providing healthcare to the patient and their families.
I have also explored the multiple strategies related to effective care support for the concerned patients and their families. I will implement the same strategies for assessing the requirements of the patient and act accordingly to provide the best care with proper communication. Therefore the reconsideration of the approach and attitude towards attending to the patient will be effective in providing the best care with minimal risk.
Conclusion
- This essay also helps to reflect on the importance of “Assisting a patient with catheter care” clinical skills in person-centred care
- On the other hand, this assignment uses mainly “Driscoll's reflective model (2006)” for understanding the completing way of this reflection
- It is concluded that Reflection links to professional development by encouraging the identification of development activities and their impact. It also modifies actions, behaviour, and learning skills for future work
- Catheter care strategy can build my knowledge and will help me to further patient care and services
